Believe and Remember

The following comes from A Child Is Born by W. Jeffrey Marsh, pgs. 14-23:

A few years ago a Church News editorial described three levels of Christmas. The first was called the 'Santa Claus level.' It is the level of Christmas trees, food, fun, decorations, colorful packages, shopping and socials in warm open houses, excited children, and exhausted but loving parents; the level at which we eat too much, spend too much, and do too much - and enjoy every minute of it. But soon the tree dries out and the needles fall. The toys break, the dieting begins, and we notice the lonely and hungry are still with us.

A higher and more fulfilling level of Christmas could be called the 'Silent Night level.' It is the enjoyment of all beautiful Christmas carols, the magnificent Nativity, the shepherds in the hills near Bethlehem, angels with their glad tidings, the new star, and wise men traveling from afar in search of the Holy One. But even this level will not long satisfy the desperate needs of a fallen world. Those who keep Christ in the manger will never find the mature Savior, and will, in the end, still be disappointed and empty.

For Christmas to meet all the expectations of both child and adult, for Christmas to last all year long and grow in beauty and spirit it must have the power to change lives. And that only happens on the third level, the 'level of the Resurrected Lord,' the level of the adult Christ. It is here we find lasting joy, lasting hope, and lasting peace. This level teaches us of charity, forgiveness, and love for the unlovable, forgiveness for enemies. This is the adult Christ who gave us a perfect example and asked us to follow Him. "Accepting that invitation is the way--the only way--to celebrate Christmas all year and all life long.

BELIEVE Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. When Christ came into the world he also came unto the world. He was sent here to each of us. His whole 'work and glory' is to bring to pass our eternal life and immortality. In Gethsemane and on Calvary, He worked out the infinite and eternal Atonement. It was the greatest single act of love in recorded history. Then followed His death and miraculous Resurrection. "I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me. And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up on the cross." "To this end was I born, for this cause came I into the world."

"REMEMBER, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God that ye must build your foundation.....a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall." Similarly, if we build the symbols of Christmas on Christ, we won't fail to experience the real spirit of Christmas.

President David O. McKay observed, "What you sincerely in your heart think of Christ....will determine what you are [and] will largely determine what your acts will be."

I am still reading this book and it is opening my mind and my eyes to a higher and better way to celebrate this wonderous time of year. I highly recommend grabbing this book. At www.deseretbook.com it is marked down to half off, about $6.95. What a bargain!!

Happy Christmas to all as we BELIEVE and REMEMBER our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Many years ago two General Authorities called a very young man to be a new stake president. In his response, the new stake president said he would give total devotion to his calling and would not ask any of the members of his stake to be more devoted than he. Then he bore his testimony that he believed the gospel with all his heart and proposed to live it."Later at lunch one of the General Authorities asked this new stake president whether he knew absolutely that this gospel is true. He answered that he did not. The senior Apostle said to his fellow Apostle, 'He knows it just as well as you do. The only thing that he does not know is that he does know it. It will be but a short time until he does know it. . . . You do not need to worry.'"A short time later, the new stake president testified that following a spiritual experience, 'I shed tears of gratitude to the Lord for the abiding, perfect, and absolute testimony that came into my life of the divinity of this work' (Heber J. Grant, Gospel Standards, comp. G. Homer Durham [1941], 192-93). "Many of us do not have a full awareness of what we really know. Even though we have been taught the gospel, we may not be fully aware of what the Lord has put in our 'inward parts' and written in our hearts. . . . You are heirs to great promises. You have the opportunity to become more than 'hewers of wood and drawers of water' (Josh. 9:21)."I do not claim to have an absolute understanding of all of the principles of the gospel, but I have come to know with certainty the divinity and authority of this Church. This came to me gradually, line upon line and precept upon precept. I now know that I know, just as you can come to know that you know. It can happen to you."Knowledge comes through faith. In our day and time we must come to know the truthfulness of what was on the golden plates without seeing them. They are not available for us to see and handle as they were for the Three Witnesses and for the Eight Witnesses. Some of those who actually saw and handled the golden plates did not remain faithful to the Church. Seeing an angel would be a great experience, but it is far greater to come to a knowledge of the divinity of the Savior through faith and the witness of the Spirit."

Better Edward

This is Cillian Murphy. I think he looks more like Edward Cullen should look. What do you think??

Quotes from Pres. Monson

"Joy and happiness come from living the way the Lord wants you to live and from service to God and others"

"In moments when the light of resolution dims and when the heart grows faint, we can take comfort from His promise: 'Be not weary in welldoing.' Out of small things proceedeth that which is great. Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind."

"Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was the supreme builder of bridges for you, for me, for all humankind. He has built the bridges over which we must cross if we are to reach our heavenly home."

"The face of sin today often wears the mask of tolerance. Do not be deceived; behind that facade is heartache, unhappiness and pain....YOU be the one to make a stand for right, even if you stand alone. Have the moral courage to be a light for others to follow."

Movies

I saw two movies this weekend....yes, at the theater. CYBI?? First was Australia with KVO on Friday. This is a really really good movie. I highly recommend.

Then on Saturday I saw Twilight with Becky B. and Kristy P. Twilight was much better than expected. Edward didn't bug me at all. Jacob is still my favorite character. He is so darn adorable! This was Kristy's third time and she likes it more each time.

Drive Friendly Pass It On

This sticker was on my newspaper this morning. It is HILARIOUS so I just have to share. The way Utahn’s actually drive is in red. I think if people are actually TAUGHT how to drive and not given a license if they can’t drive it would help alleviate these issues. Enjoy!

It’s the holiday season – so much to do! The Utah Department of Public Safety is asking for your help. Aggressive and inattentive driving contributes to crashes throughout Utah. Make an effort to drive with care and courtesy this holiday season to reduce the number of driver error and aggressive related crashes.

•Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. (Unless someone signals to change lanes in front of you. Then speed up so you are inches from the bumper of the car in front of you and then flip everyone off)
•Use your signal to turn, change lanes, or merge. (Never use blinkers for any reason. EVER!)
•If another driver wants to pass, let them. (See #1. Speed up or slow down so the other driver is unable to change lanes and they miss their turns. Then flip them off)
•Respect pedestrians’ right of way. (Turn whenever you want. It’s their fault if they’re in the road)
•Adjust your attitude; let other drivers’ actions go. (Make sure you do everything within your power to ignore other drivers or traffic signals. Make sure you block or slow down traffic while driving. Then flip everyone off)
•Plan your trips ahead to avoid congestion. (I do what I want. When I want. How I want. Everyone else just stay away from me. Then flip every one off)
•Avoid texting, cell phone use, shaving, putting on makeup, reading, etc. (This is the only way to drive. Texting and talking is the best way to ignore traffic, signals, drivers, weather. You old fogies just can’t multi-task like us teens. Then just flip everyone off)
Treat other drivers the way you would like to be treated. (Heck, I will do what I want. When I want. How I want. I will drive as fast or as slow as I want. In any or all lanes I choose. I will cut in line, cut off cars, make turns right in front of others so they must slam on their brakes to avoid hitting me. Then I flip them off. Stop in the middle of the road when I missed my turn and backup so I can go where I want. I will play my music as loud as I want and turn my rear view mirror so I can look at myself when I drive. Who cares about the cars behind me? I will drive down the center island or the right shoulder to pass all the idiots who are driving correctly and waiting their turn. It’s especially cool when you smoke, shave, apply makeup, read, text, drive and shift all at the same time. This is especially true when it’s snowing really hard)

My New Theme Song

Trace’s new CD X (or Ten) came out this week. It's a great CD!! Trace’s voice is clear and strong and he hits every single note. There’s a nice mix of new and old and fun and reflective. He sings a lot of Baritone too, which I love!

Song #7 is my new theme song. Here are the lyrics…

I’m gonna marry for money
I’ll be so darn rich it ain’t funny
I’m gonna have me a trust fund, yacht club, hot tub piece of the pie
Find me a sweet sugar daddy
With a whole lot of zeros and commas
Don’t really care if he loves me
He can even be ugly
But I’m gonna marry for money

I won’t have to love his family
I won’t have to like his friends
And if it works out like I planned it
I won’t ever have to work again

I’m gonna fly to Hawaii
On a Leer jet the old man will buy me
And I’ll call him sweetheart and honey
If he’s a hundred and twenty
I’m gonna marry for money
I don’t care if he loves me
He can really be ugly
I’m gonna marry for money!!

Ch-ch-changes

I cleaned out my storage space this past week. Thank you Joey for your help! In doing so I have a house full of boxes. I gave most of my stuffed animals to a young man for his Eagle Project (Christmas for Navajo children). I went though my boxes of videos deciding what to keep and what to donate to the library. My boxes and boxes of books are next to be donated. I watched three of the movies that I LOVED. The Last of the Mohicans, White Nights, Someone to Watch Over Me.

I still love Mohicans. This movie has some of the greatest lines...IMHO. My favorite is when the British officer, Duncan, asks Hawkeye and his adopted father and brother, "how is it that you are going to Kentuck-ee with a war going on?" Hawkeye answers "well, we face north and real subtle like turn left." Another favorite is when Cora, Col. Munro's eldest daughter, tells Duncan, "You are a man with few admirable qualities. But taken as a whole, I was wrong to have thought so highly of you." Slam! And, of course, the line most people remember is Hawkeye telling Cora "Stay alive no matter what occurs. No matter how far. No matter how long. Stay alive. I will find you." This line makes all the romantics cry and all the men choke down a chortle. I need to check out from the library the book by James Fenimore Cooper. The book is almost always better than the movie!

White Nights...the story is still good but the 80's music really got on my nerves. Baryshnikov just doesn't look good dancing modern and tap....his style is just too traditional ballet and his feet point the wrong way.

Someone to Watch...This is a movie for hopeless romantics. But, I couldn't stand the adultery in the movie.

I also watched Eye of the Needle that I rented from Netflix. I remember LOVING this movie when it came out in 1981. When I watched it I was embarrassed by the nudity and language. How come I didn't remember that? Why did I loved it so much 27 years ago?? UG! This is a don't watch and forget about movie now.

Halloween 10/31/08

This is my Halloween costume. I went as Jo the accountant (like Joe the plummer)....a bitter typical white person. Man, this costume took me a long time to put together!
After work I went to Kathy's house and Kathy, Sharon, Scott and I played dominos, ate chips and salsa, and watch Michael Jackson videos. Scott and Sharon both had to work the next day so Kathy and I talked until 1:30 in the morning. What a wild bunch huh??

Collin Raye Concert 11/5/08

I went to a Collin Raye concert at Desert Star tonight. This is the first time I'd seen him in concert. I went by myself because finding someone to go with is not an easy feat.

Collin is a great performer. He put on a really good show. It was a small room and it was just Collin, his piano player, Melanie, and guitar player, Scott. Collin's daughter, Brittany, came on stage and sang a few songs with him. Collin and Brittay moved to SLC because Brittany's eldest daughter is very ill and Primary Children's is the only hospital that will help them.

Collin says he will play there again next November. All his shows this week sold out. I definitely want to go next year.

It was really fun because I saw two people I know. My friend Connie from the 4th Ward and her daughter, Tammy, were there with friends. Connie's other daughter Debbi was my Mary Kay lady and I taughter her daughter Alisa in Primary.

Tammy and her friends were the wild bunch at the concert. It was nice not being the loudest one there. I hope Tammy got some pictures. Cameras weren't allowed but some people were taking pictures with their phones. If she has pictures I will post them later.

Tammy and her friends were ooing and awing over how sexy Collin is. Well, I can't agree because Trace Adkins is the sexiest man I've ever seen. Maybe I need to convert them? Well, maybe I'll just let them be. Collin seems like a nice guy and seems to be a good Christian.

I think it would have been much more fun if I was sitting with people I knew. It's hard to get rowdy and share the fun when you don't know the people you're sitting by. Sometimes being single really sucks!!
Goof job Collin and gang. It was a fabulous evening!!!

President Uchtdorf - Ethics

President Uchtford spoke at UVU Student Assn. yesterday. Below are highlights from the SL Trib article.

"Globalization, with all of its virtues, has one imperfection," Uchtdorf said. "Everyone feels connected, but not responsible." Which is why he said people must maintain high standards of ethics as they go out into a more connected world. He said Latter-day Saints are obligated to deliver people from dangerous routines and guide others toward the future. Uchtdorf spoke in the McKay Events Center at the UVU Student Association's invitation. Uchtdorf said the global crisis created by the collapse of the Japanese Yen in the 1990s and today's subprime mortgages illustrate risks associated with a connected world. While there are risks, they should not be paralyzing, nor should they cause recklessness, Uchtdorf said. Honesty and adhering to the gospel's basic principles will help people embrace an integrated world and not only allow them to succeed, but also to help others.

Quote

This shows at the beginning of the movie Apocalypto, an onscreen quote from Will Durant:

"A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within."

This struck me really hard. Is this not what is happening in America right now? We are quickly destroying ourselves from within and soon we will be conquered. Unless, we can quickly repent and humble ourselves and take our country back from the Socialists and Communists who want to destroy our Constitution.

-Get out of debt now
-Live within or below your means
-Live the commandments of God
-Pray daily
-Read the scriptures daily
-Pay an honest tithe
-Go to church
-Love one another (this one is especially hard for me)

Daily Herald 10/26/08 Trust In God

Glenn Beck urges Utahns to trust in God

Caleb Warnock - DAILY HERALD
At time wiping tears from his cheeks, at times shouting jubilantly, conservative talk show host Glenn Beck admonished a crowd at UVU on Saturday night to trust God during the global economic storm. "Know who you are, know what you got here, know what makes you so great, know what makes you so strong. It is your values," Beck told a crowd of a thousand gathered to hear him. "It is your commitment to do the hard thing, your commitment to God. In God we trust."
Star of the fastest-growing TV show on cable in addition to a successful radio show, Beck became the first-ever recipient of the Pioneer in Leadership Award on Saturday, created by the Utah Valley Chapter of the BYU Management Society "to recognize those that exemplify the pioneer spirt of courage in adversity and integrity in leadership."
Beck closed the evening by speaking on the power of choice. He was preceded by a VIP $2,000-a-table dinner in his honor. The public, paying $20 per ticket, then entered the McKay Events Center on UVU campus to hear a handful of singers before hearing Beck's speech. The event was a scholarship fundraising event.
Beck received a standing ovation as he took the podium just after 9 p.m. He spoke for over an hour.
Weeping, Beck challenged the audience to remember the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
"It is the best America has ever been in my lifetime, so when I warn you something is coming, something wicked this way comes, the economy is not healthy, this is not going to pass without great life-changing pain, you could focus on that or focus on what you could become because of it.
"We will pull together and stand shoulder to shoulder, we will become compassionate, we will be Americans again, we will be in it together, it will be a great and glorious time to raise our children. It will bring us closer, if we choose."
At times, Beck's message was aimed directly at a Mormon audience.
"I am a child of God with the power of the priesthood," Beck asked his audience to remember about themselves. He continued by urging the audience to be a shelter and leader for others.
"I am an American; I know tomorrow will be better because I am," he said, to a standing ovation at the close of his speech.
Following the ovation, Beck took the podium again.
"My family and I pray for you," he said with emotion. "We ask you to pray for us. We have a great amount of power. It is all within our grasp."
Beck began his speech not with an autobiographical sketch but with a biography of the audience. Saying many people feel they know him because of his celebrity status, Beck said he felt he knew his audience.
"I may not get a chance to listen to you but I think I know who you are," he said, saying the audience works hard, is careful with their money while being worried about the economy, compassionate "yet you find yourself almost constantly pissed off by lazy people," feels uneasy with the direction of the country, is dissatisfied with both candidates for president, and wonders what is true.
"I'm here to tell you the problems are not as big as you think they are," Beck said. "Some are a lot bigger, but the solutions are not that hard."
Americans have become "convinced that our voice does not really matter because it is just little old me and one person cannot make a difference," he said. "We are convinced that one person cannot affect change."
Beck said that for two years he has been warning of impending financial collapse. That collapse is the result of "ridiculous choices" and a failure to exercise common sense.
Beck said he had personal knowledge of collapse, noting he is a recovering alcoholic.
"I did just about everything I could to destroy myself and kill myself," he said, noting that at one point doctors told him he had eight months to live. "Here is a moment of hope. I'm still here ... never lose hope ... we are going to survive and thrive and pull ourselves back up, and we are going to be Americans."
Beck told those gathered to take inspiration from the obstacles faced not only by the founders of the country but of the Mormon pioneers. The difference between losers and failures is that failures try again until they find success.
Beck wept when speaking of how George Washington inspires him, and spoke emotionally several times of having conversations with God, asking in whom Beck could trust. Audience members wiped tears from their own eyes as he spoke, nodding their agreement.
"We can have hope because God is bigger than any mountain, God is stronger," he said. "Those mountains can fall, those mountains can move. God does not. That should provide us with tremendous hope. We must not fear, for is God is on our side, nothing will conquer us, but we have to be careful."
Kimball and Brooke Roundy of Cedar Hills were among the fans in the crowd. The couple said they came to hear Beck speak because of his honesty.
"I really enjoy Glenn Beck and what he is doing," Kimball said. "He is speaking about truth and what is really going on in the world, as opposed to the rest of the media -- they don't necessarily report truth but what they are told to report."
Roundy said he has been watching Beck on television for a year.
"Everything I hear from him is right, as opposed to the other stuff I hear, which is less than the truth," he said.
Mark and Darcy Jacobs came from Bountiful for the event because Beck espouses their conservative values.
"Glenn Beck is a true American," Mark Jacobs said. "He is concerned about standing up for the values that formed our nation, and defending the Constitution and the principles of the Constitution. He is outspoken in America, making us aware of what is going on."
Beck has influenced Jacobs's choices, "by helping me understand some of the positions of the candidates [for president] that I did not understand before," Jacobs said

In The Beginning...

I decided to join the 21st century and start a blog. Not that I do or think or say anything exciting or profound. Maybe this is a simple and easy way to journal?? Because if you know me you know I don't journal...scrapbook...or do anything remotely similar. For Pete's sake how many cat pictures can one person take? Okay, we'll need to throw in a few pictures of Trace Adkins too.
Check Spelling
My life isn't exciting or glamorous but it is a good life. I have been blessed far beyond what I deserve. I have a great job, a roof over my head, good health, amazing family and friends, born and raised in America, and a knowledge of Jesus Christ and His plan for our salvation. With all that said I am easily in the top 1% of humans who have ever lived on this earth. How did I get so blessed?? I have no idea. But I count my blessings each and every day so I don't forget how deeply blessed I am.

My kids are Buster, Bear, and Mitzi

This is Buster, 13 yr old Maine Coon mix, brother to Bear

This is Bear, 13 yr old Maine Coon mix, brother to Buster

This is Mitzi, 13 yr old calico Manx

Buster and Bear came to live with me on 12/29/01. I adopted them from the Humane Society four days after putting down my sweet Maggie who had lung cancer. Mitzi came to live with us about a year later in January of 2003. She was given to a man I delivered Meals On Wheels to and he couldn't afford to keep her. He asked me to take her and find her a home. Well, the home I found was mine. She and the boys don't get a long. In fact, Bear and Mitzi are like quarrelling two-year olds....still! Buster seems more tolerant of her....or she's more tolerant of him. Truth be told Mitzi only gets a long with me and that's not even all the time. But, she deserves a good home where she is loved and cared for and bless her heart I do love her!

I moved to Utah in June of 1991 and I swore I would never move to Utah! Seventeen years later I'm still here. Maybe I need to get a complete mental examination?!?

I got a job working for Key Bank as a Lockbox Supervisor where I stayed for two years making HALF of what I was making in CA. Then came a two year stint with Goldsmith Jewelers as accountant and office manager. Then I worked for two pathetic companies (I will not mention their names but I'm sure they no longer exist) part-time while I finished my BS in Accountancy at BYU. I have been working for my current employer for 10 years now (WOW) as an accountant and payroll manager.

I spent three years as an officer in the Utah Chapter APA and will soon be starting my third year doing taxes for H&R Block.
Well that's pretty much my life in a nutshell. Check back soon for more detail and drama from the days of my life.
